Audio Rack in Glass and Aluminum Finish RTA AVM-005 Review

The image of this rack looks good and the actual rack looks good from a distance.

Contrary to appearances, there are only 4 pieces that are solid aluminum. These are the 4 caps that are on the top shelf. The surface that contacts the top shelf are not finished, exibiting the rough saw cuts that came from dividing up the original aluminum rod stock. The perimeter edges are sharp as they were not beveled. Although turned to produce a finish, one can easily see several blemishes that must have come from poor handling during the manufacturing or packaging phases.

The legs are thin aluminum with plastic end-caps that hold metal insert nuts to accommodate the assembly. They too are blemished. The plastic end-caps appear to be the type of plastic that gets brittle and then breaks as it ages.

The glass shelving is thick and beveled, which is good to see. However, at least one sheet was gouged on its surface.

The legs, back-plate, top and bottom shelves are attached with bolts while the 3 other shelves are only attached at their fronts, resting on pegs at their rear. This has to be considered as the unit is moved into position, since the 3 middles shelves are only worthy of supporting a downward pressure, not sideways nudging or upward lifting.

Finally, the 14 bolts that hold the unit together pass through holes in the glass sheets. There are no guards to keep the metal of the bolts from contacting the glass, which might lead to the glass cracking. The review of another similar unit reported that the alignment of the legs was poor, and since the holes in the glass for the front legs are much larger than the bolts, one can see how the legs have a wide range of locations during assembly that detract from the finished unit. I put a couple wraps of black electric tape on the 4 rear bolts to prevent contact with the glass, and cut 1/4 inch segments of Tygon tubing to go into the 10 front holes to better control the alignment as well as to protect the glass from contacting the bolts.

Overall, the unit looks good if one squints. But with eyes wide open, you could do better.

EverRouge Viola 24-Piece Room in a Bag, California King Review

I really love the look of this bedding ensemble, I just wish the quality was better. Fabric is a bit on the thin side compared to other sets I've seen. Sheets are pretty stiff and I most likely won't use them. Comforter is wide enough to extend to the bedskirt on both sides, but not nearly as long as it appears in the picture. The comforter is a couple inches too short. If it is pulled all the way to the head of my mattress, it doesn't fall far enough down the foot of the mattress. Guess you're supposed to use all the pillows to hide the gap. Color is a little darker and more of a slate blue than it appeared in the picture. Bedskirt is open at the corners, which is nice for a bed with a footboard.

Like I said, it looks great, I just hope it lasts.

Frigidaire FFMV162LW 1.6 Cu. Ft. White Over-the-Range Microwave Review

This microwave seems (after 1 month) to be a very good basic model. We selected it based on the Frigidaire brand's good rating in Consumer Reports (low numbers of repairs reported), and the similarity of the model number to one of their top rated models (FMV152 in CR vs. FFMV162 for this one).

Installation was fairly easy. Be sure to read through the whole process first, and make sure you have the right drill bits on hand. If you are installing it place of an older one, the holes in the overhead cabinet may not line up. This was not a problem for us as old and new holes were far enough apart, and we could skip drilling a new hole for the power cord as it laid flat enough on the top of the unit to reach the old hole. This microwave was about 10 pounds lighter than the 15 year old one it replaced, and has nearly the same dimensions (relatively petite compared with most models out there).

No complaints about its cooking abilities, though I've been adding an additional 30 seconds to its preset beverage time of 1:40. It is fairly quiet while running. The "done cooking" beeps are a bit loud and long by my taste, and do not stop when you open the door, though you can silence them if you press Cancel before opening the door. Bonus feature: you'll get reminder beeps periodically if you leave your food inside when done. The inside has plenty of space, and the controls, while basic, do have a few good tricks like pressing 1, 2, or 3 to immediately run for that number of minutes.

The vent fans are loud but not obnoxiously loud. We haven't tested their smoke/steam moving capability yet. If you have the duct for it, you can vent to the outside. The stove lights are plenty bright for our needs. If you use the kitchen timer, you may miss the "done" beep--it's a very quiet single beep. Probably the biggest detraction is that the door has a sort of sloppy, chunky sound and feel when opening or closing it. It's plenty tight when closed, but you can tell it's a very basic latching mechanism.

Overall we are pleased with our choice.

FURINNO WA-6020-4 Hidup boss High Back Ergonomic Leather Executive Chair, Black Review

Let's be honest--you're most likely looking at this because it is inexpensive. The low price tag, combined with the words "High" and "Ergonomic" made me think this was a steal.

I should have spent a couple more bucks. I'm 6'6", and this chair hits just under my shoulder. There's absolutely nothing "high backed" about it.

You also really understand why the price tag is so low when you put it together. The instructions are sparse but sufficient--the whole experience feels kind of like putting an Ikea "flat pack" together. The instructions said I should have 8 screws of one length and 4 of another, but each screw was identical. (And they worked!) The top of the chair almost "balances" on the base--I've picked it up a few times to have the base fall off. And the height adjustment lever is hit or miss: I sometimes have to bounce in the chair a bit to make it go up.

I'm sure I'll give this to my kid some day soon. In the meantime, this is an acceptable addition to my office, but a purchase I wouldn't repeat.
