I have never had any problems with the belt but one week before the warranty was set to expire, the switch burnt out. I called Hoover and was told that the closest Service location was 60 miles from me. The rep offered me different choices: 1.Take the vacuum cleaner to the Service Center and Hoover would pay to have them mail it back to me 2. Mail the vacuum cleaner to the Service Center and get reimbursed for shipping cost 3. Get an estimate for the repair from a local repair shop, wait for approval, pay for the repair, and get reimbursed.
I chose option 3. I called Hoover at 7:30 am, then called a local repair shop, faxed the estimate to Hoover, received approval, and at 1:30 pm the same day, I was able to pick up my repaired vacuum. WOW! I have faxed the invoice to Hoover and now I am waiting for the reimbursement check. I was told it would arrive in 6-8 weeks. Overall, it was a very painless warranty claim!
Other than the problem with the burnt out switch, the vacuum cleaner is great. We have two long haired pets that shed a lot and the vacuum picks up all the animal hair on the first pass. After a year of almost daily use, the suction is still as good as it was on the first day.

UPDATE: It is now almost 3 months later and I am yet to receive the reimbursement check...

UPDATE (January 2013): I have received the reimbursement check. It was mailed to the wrong address at first.
